Who were your favorite wrestlers from the old AWA?
I grew up near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and watched "All Star Wrestling" religiously. I sure miss some of the old guys from that era!
For anyone who is old enough to remember, and who followed the AWA, who were some of your favorite wrestlers at the time?
Mine were Hulk Hogan (this was even before he was in Rocky III), Baron Von Raschke, and "Rock & Roll" Buck Zumhoff. My most hated heels were Ken Patera, Nick Bockwinkle, Jerry Blackwell, and Bobby "The Weasel" Heenan, of course.
I didn’t get to see the AWA until they got on ESPN in the mid 80’s, so I only know OF those who were there before the ESPN deal.
Of those I got to watch every week, my favorites were The Crusher and Mad Dog Vachon (though it was near the end of their careers and their appearances were sporadic). Of the "newer" wrestlers, my favorites were Nick Bockwinkel (one of the all-time greats), Jimmy Snuka, and Bruiser Brody (or "King Kong" Brody, as the AWA called him).
I was also a big fan of Curt Hennig and Scott Hall.
My favorite heels were Playboy Buddy Rose and Colonel DeBeers. VERY entertaining and I used to look forward to seeing them. Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissie was my favorite manager. Again, very colorful and entertaining.
I hated him the first time around, but after seeing him again during the repeats recently, I developed an appreciation for Boris Zhukov. A very good wrestler, and an under-rated heel.

I only got to see the AWA during the mid 80’s til they closed. Though I’ve seen some matches from before that time, and have seen Verne Gagne, Hulk Hogan and Bobby Heenan there before they went to WWF, I didn’t see them during actual AWA shows, I saw them after they left.
But my favorite wrestler by far in the old AWA was Nick Bockwinkle. He was just as good a face as he was a heel. He just had that aura around him like he was a World Champion..and he had some classic promos that he’s done.
During the mid 80’s the time I watched the most of I also liked The Roadwarriors while they were there. I was a big fan of the Midnight Rockers, as well as Curt Hennig. I like Madusa Miceli a lot, not only because she could wrestle, but should would wear some..um, very nice outfits to the ring as well.
I used to like The Nasty Boys, though they were heels, I enjoyed watching them at that time, and them coming out to Janet Jackson’s song "Nasty Boys".
I wasn’t a huge fan of Sgt. Slaughter when I was a kid and he was in the AWA, and I never became a huge fan of Verne Gagne..and at that time I had no idea he was the owner of the company.
I used to totally hate Baron Von Raschke, and Col. Debeers…I always wanted to see them lose to someone…they played great heels.
